Big O captures uncertainty and hope on the new EP “Blindfolded”

Big O brings a soulful, reflective side of Hip Hop into focus with “Blindfolded,” a 10-track, 30-minute EP created alongside San Diego rapper Benny Canales. Built around lo-fi textures, warm melodies, soulful samples, and rugged boom-bap rhythms, the project explores what it feels like to keep moving when the destination is unclear. Inspired by sobriety and shaped by the pair’s first coming together to showcase San Diego’s hip-hop scene, the EP balances nostalgia, isolation, struggle, and freedom. As we move through “Blindfolded,” there is a sense of honesty that makes the project easy to connect with, especially when we consider how often life asks us to make decisions without giving us a clear picture of what comes next.

“No Chains” sets an important tone with its sense of release and independence. The boom-bap foundation gives the song a grounded character, while the warmer musical elements keep it from feeling overly heavy. There is a feeling of breaking away from restrictions, making it a fitting expression of the EP’s wider message about finding freedom after difficult periods. From there, “Good Times” brings a noticeable shift in mood, leaning into nostalgia and the memories that stay with us when life changes. Its soulful character gives the record breathing room, creating a moment where we can appreciate better days while still understanding the struggles that surround them. The contrast between these two songs gives the project dimension, moving naturally from personal freedom into reflection without losing its steady Hip Hop identity.

That reflective quality continues with “Day Room,” which carries a more relaxed, intimate atmosphere. The lo-fi influence gives the song a lived-in quality, allowing the production to feel warm and understated rather than overly polished. It fits the EP’s cinematic approach by creating the impression of a specific place and moment, giving us space to sit with the mood. “Lonely” then turns inward, exploring isolation through a darker emotional lens while maintaining the stripped-back character that gives “Blindfolded” much of its appeal. The progression feels natural because the uncertainty introduced earlier is now being experienced on a more personal level. Closing the five-track selection, “Heat is On” adds another layer of pressure and intensity, creating a stronger sense of movement after the quieter emotions of “Lonely.” Together, these songs reveal an EP that is not afraid to sit with uncomfortable feelings while still leaving room for optimism.

What makes “Blindfolded” interesting is the balance between its difficult subject matter and its refusal to become completely consumed by darkness. Big O and Benny Canales use familiar Hip Hop foundations to tell a story about uncertainty in a way that feels personal, cinematic, and grounded in real experience. The EP’s lo-fi and boom-bap character gives the project a cohesive sound, while the different emotional shades keep the 30-minute runtime moving. For us, it feels like music created during a period of change, where the answers are not always available but the decision to keep going remains.
